Can Jack Russell Terriers Eat Bananas? [Follow These Tips]

Any of us who are raising a Jack Russell Terrier are in the same boat. We often want to offer our Jack Russell Terrier some tasty fruit such as bananas.

We are not always sure if something such as bananas is considered safe or even advised for Jack Russell Terriers.

It is a common question.

You are being an ethical owner by checking if bananas are safe for your Jack Russell Terrier in advance.

Here is the common question I see as a Jack Russell Terrier owner myself and I have been raising a Jack Russell Terrier for the past 3 years and here is what I can tell you on this topic.

Can Jack Russell Terriers Eat Bananas?

Yes, Jack Russell Terriers can eat bananas. Bananas are an excellent source of Potassium, Vitamin C, and Vitamin B6 that your Jack Russell Terrier can benefit from. Bananas should be cut into small bite-size portions and offered as a treat for your Jack Russell Terrier.

The key phrase I used above is what is essential to understand.

Bananas should be considered a delicacy or a treat for your Jack Russell Terrier.

Not as a total meal replacement.

No worries, the rest of this brief discussion will break down everything you need to know about offering your Jack Russell Terrier bananas, how you should do it and what you need to be aware of.

Here is how I intend to break down this discussion for you today:

Jack Russell Terriers and Bananas

As a Jack Russell Terrier owner, you may be curious about what your Jack Russell Terrier will enjoy eating and how you can remain safe and offer your Jack Russell foods they can have, should have, and that they will enjoy.

Many dog owners get tunnel vision and think protein in many circumstances and think that outside of the regular diet or some meat-based foods, you don’t have many more options, which is not true.

Other foods such as fruits and veggies can offer your dog other vitamins and nutrients that can be very beneficial for your Jack Russell, which certainly includes bananas.

Let me repeat that just in case you are still on the fence or skeptical.

Jack Russell Terriers can absolutely have bananas.

In fact, as we mentioned at the beginning of this discussion, bananas offer many additional nutrients and vitamins for your Jack Russell Terrier, including the following:

  • Vitamin B6
  • Vitamin C
  • Potassium

All three of these nutrients are beneficial for Jack Russell’s energy and health.

However, you do have other things you need to consider and things to keep in mind before diving straight into offering bananas to your new dog.

I want to cover those details next.

How Much Banana Can You Feed A Jack Russell Terrier?

One of the first considerations you need to keep in mind when offering bananas to your Jack Russell comes down to frequency and quantity.

How much and how often can you offer bananas to your Jack Russell?

Well, here is my first piece of advice on this topic.

Take It Slow

When offering bananas to your Jack Russell, it is best to start slow.

You do not want to run the risk of upsetting your Jack Russell’s stomach or causing loose or runny stool.

I am sure you have heard this lecture before or known about the dangers of sudden diet changes with any dog breed.

Often it can lead to uncontrollable bowel movements and diarrhea.

So, to recap, when you start deciding to offer bananas to your Jack Russell, make them bite-size slices suitable to eat without the risk of choking and keeping it to a small feasible amount that will not upset their belly.

Another Benefit Bananas Can Offer Your Jack Russell Terrier

It does not seem right not to briefly discuss one of the other key benefits you can count on when it comes to offering your Jack Russell bananas.

Has anyone ever met a Jack Russell that does not love rewards or treats?

I know my Jack Russell loves them and will do just about anything possible to get her paws on any form of a treat.

Once you have determined if your Jack Russell Terrier is a fan of bananas or not (I assume they will be), you can begin using this to your advantage.

Use small banana slices towards training and rewarding behavior that you prefer to see.

Treats and positive reinforcement are two very under looked methods for getting what you want out of a dog.

Especially with the Jack Russell Terrier.

Bananas May Be Safe and Enjoyable for Your Jack Russell, but Moderation Is Key

When it comes to anything diet-related and your Jack Russell, moderation is critical, and bananas fall into this category as well.

Ensure that if you plan to offer your Jack Russell bananas, you are cutting them into appropriate-sized bites that will not cause any form of choking, and make sure not to overdo it during any serving.

Bananas can provide significant vitamins and nutrients for your JR.

They should be viewed as a treat and offered in feasible and sensible amounts and frequencies.

Nonetheless, I am almost positive your Jack Russell will eat bananas as much as my Jack Russell and love them!

Luna and I wish you the best of luck with your Jack Russell Terriers and the journey you have ahead of you.
